Leading health, safety and wellbeing across an organisation

The IOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health Leadership and Management gives learners the opportunity to develop and apply a broad range of competencies that support effective health, safety and wellbeing practice within workplaces and workplace cultures.

It is designed for OSH professionals who have — or aspire to have — responsibility within their organisation for managing OSH policy, procedures and practice. The qualification is regulated by Ofqual, which regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England.

Entry and language requirements

Entry requirements

There are no mandatory entry requirements for the IOSH Level 6 Diploma. IOSH strongly recommends that learners have completed the IOSH Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health Practice, an equivalent IOSH-accredited qualification and/or have relevant experience, as this level of prior learning is assumed.

Study centres are responsible for ensuring the qualification is appropriate for the learner's age, ability and professional experience, and that learners can meet the learning outcomes and assessment requirements.

English language

The qualification is taught and assessed in English. For learners who are not from a majority English-speaking country, the handbook states that they are expected to demonstrate English language comprehension at a level equivalent to IELTS 7.0.

Study centres must confirm that applicable non-native English-speaking learners meet this requirement before registration.

How you are assessed

Internally assessed, externally quality assured

There is no traditional written examination. Learners must successfully complete three assignment components specified in the IOSH qualification handbook.

Technical Evaluation Assignment

Unit L6D01

Learners complete the IOSH AO-set Technical Evaluation Assignment, which includes a report and a presentation.

OSH Strategic Proposal Assignment

Units L6D02 & L6D03

Learners complete the IOSH AO-set OSH Strategic Proposal Assignment, including a report and a presentation with assessor questions and answers.

Self-Reflection Assignment

All units

Learners complete a Self-Reflection Assignment in report format, reviewing their own OSH leadership capability and continuing professional development.

IOSH membership

The Diploma meets the academic requirements for Graduate IOSH membership (GradIOSH) and supports progression towards Certified IOSH membership (CertIOSH). It is also mapped against the IOSH Competency Framework for Certified IOSH Member.

    Learners studying an IOSH Level 6 qualification may be eligible during their studies, subject to applicable IOSH eligibility requirements.

  2. Graduate

    GradIOSH

    Academic requirements met on successful completion of the Level 6 Diploma.

  3. Certified

    CertIOSH

    Completion alone does not automatically provide Certified membership. A minimum of two years' relevant full-time experience and mandatory CPD are required in addition to the qualification.
